Saturday Night's camp fire

I didn't make it to Friday nights camp fire because I was cleaning up the mess from the paper making. But I did attend Saturday night's camp fire.

Here is a shot of the "amphitheater" fire pit. Melinda is explaining the rules around the campfire (no running, etc).

I hosted the singing contest. It is where each troop gets up and sings a Girl Scout song. The rule is no other troop can use that song or they are eliminated. After 48 songs no one had been eliminated and we were ready for s'mores so we ended with everyone being "winners!"
This is Samantha's (far left) troop doing the "I'm Bring Home a Baby Bumblebee."

The fire was HOT! Maddie can hardly roast her marshmallow because of the heat.

More Camporee Fun

I posted the schedule on my previous entry for the camporee.

The younger troop (Maddie's) slept in the lodge. I had us sleep with our heads towards the middle of the circle so no one felt left out and I could quickly see what each girl was doing.
Samantha and Michelle decided they didn't want to sleep in the yurts with Jill. They didn't like the thought of using out-houses so they also joined us in the lodge.

The Oregon coast is great because you find Banana Slugs everywhere. Since we are girl scouts we had to protect the forest natural decomposers by not stepping on them or pouring salt on them.

One of the best things we did at this camporee was "hire" a cook. He was wonderful. He prepared the meals and did the clean up. He was a neat guy.

The girls are looking in the water for salmanders. Maddie is the 2nd from the left.

We saw these prints all over by the lake. I should of put my hand by it to show how large of a print it was compared to my hand. We were trying to guess if they were bear tracks.

More Survivor Challenges

Survivor Challenge- PB&J

In this challenge the girls were given 20 index cards to write out exact directions on how to make a peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. Then the "She's" read and followed the directions to a "T".

Survivor Challenge- Cat tail (outside)

This challenge took place on top of the big "litter box" (otherwise known as -sand). One girl was the cat and the other members on the team had to run and find the "cat tail". Once they got it they ran back and tied it on to the cat to make a long tail. The poor Panthers were at disadvantage because their "tail" was black (yarn) and it was hard to find them around the camp ground. The Red Dogs took first place.

Survivor Challenge- Group Cooperation Challenge (human caterpillar)

In this challenge the girls had to make a caterpillar with balloons and not using their hands. Once they got their caterpillar connected then they had to go around in a big circle. If the balloon fell or popped then the team had to start over.

For fun we connected all three tribes and had them go around the camp ground. It was funny because some of the "She's" put the balloons under their shirt (because we just said you couldn't use your hands...we didn't say you couldn't use your clothing).
Well that is about it for our Survivor weekend.

Survivor Challenge- Fashion Challenge

Survivor Challenge- Fashion Challenge

The next challenge was the Fashion Challenge. In this challenge we gave each team as much newspaper and masking tape that they wanted. We also supplied markers and other craft supplies.

Samantha and Maddie

All the tribes and their outfits. I was so surprised to see how creative and different each tribes outfits turned out.

Samantha created these "shoes" made of newspaper and masking tape.

Surivor Challenge- Tribal Art

Survivor Challenge- Tribal Art (create a tribe mascot) have the girls collect leaves, twigs, pine cones and other things

Our next challenge was to create a tribal mascot out of things we could find. I provided the pumpkin or gourd for each tribe and then Sami (Jill's daughter) gave us a tour of Cleawox. This past summer Sami spent several weeks at different camps at Cleawox. She did an awesome job showing us around the camp and explaining how things are run during the summer time. It sounded like fun. We got to see wildlife (newts) which some of the girls were very excited to hold while others wanted nothing to do with it. We also saw this "heart seat" out in the forest.

While taking a tour the girls collected stuff to create their Tribal Mascot.
Panther's Tribal Mascot (it is panther...head, body and tail).

This was the Panda's Tribal Mascot. They even created a spider web on the left side of the picture.

This was the Red Dog's Tribal Mascot. They had two "dogs" for their mascot.

It was fun watching how creative the girls and their "she's" were with what they found through out the camp ground.

2 of the Challenges

Survivor Challenge- Fire (and then eat s’mores) outside

We first had the girls make a fire they can eat (teaching them principals about each competent of the fire).
Then they went outside to make a fire in the pit. It was pitch black outside. Inside the fire pit each tribe got an area to make their fire. They got 3 matches to get the fire going. The tribes went around and collected "wet" materials to get their fires started. We did have a winner on this challenge. The Panthers were able to get their fire started and twigs burning the fastest.

After roasting marshmallows and making S'mores we came back inside the lodge for our next challenge.
Survivor Challenge- Can you sing a Girl Scout song?

Each tribe got up on the "stage" and sang a Girl Scout song (just a verse or two). You couldn't repeat a song another tribe had already sung. This challenge could of gone on all night long because some of the girls knew lots of GS songs.
Below is a picture of the Panthers singing the FROG song.

We followed this schedule very closely.
We had three tribes (black panthers, the pandas, and red dogs). They based their names off of their bandannas.

On the way home I asked the girls in my van what their favorite "challenge" was: the fire challenge, tribal art, fashion challenge and GS song.

We didn't make it to the actual beach because it started to rain and everyone was tried. So, we stopped at BJ's for icecream and then we headed home (on schedule).
